It is based on the idea that a straightforward linear-time solution exists for a more limited form of the sorting problem, which Hoare dubbed “partitioning” the array: reorganize it so that smaller values appear first, followed by larger values. If we can do this, we have not sorted the array yet, but we have made a big step, since the two slices of the partition are, each taken globally, at their definitive place in the future sorted array.
